The Hire More Heroes Act is misguided. There is no veterans’ unemployment crisis.

“Americans may be shocked to learn that there is no veterans’ unemployment crisis. The unemployment rate in 2014 for post-9/11 veterans was 7.2 percent, the lowest level in seven years of tracking these veterans. ”

Job fair targeting veterans short on opportunities

“Dozens of companies took part in a veterans job fair today, but as it turns out, barely any were willing to hire people on the spot. And many of the available positions aren’t based in Hampton Roads. The event was held at Nauticus today. NewsChannel 3 found out of the 53 companies taking part, only two were willing to hire on the spot. ”

What Government Should Actually Do To Support Veterans' Employment

“The latest crisis at the Department of Veterans Affairs has called into question again the proper role of government in the care of our veterans. Whereas healthcare is clearly in shambles, veterans’ employment is another realm in which well-meaning government involvement has been inefficient at best and ineffective or counterproductive at worst. ”

Employment and Returning Veterans

“Peter Gudmundsson talked about the availability of jobs for returning service members.”

Beyond Altruism

“Among the fondest memories Peter Gudmundsson ’85 has of his three years as an active-duty U.S. Marine officer was the time in 1987 when, off the coast of Vietnam, he stood on the deck of a U.S. Navy ship looking up at the Soviet planes flying overhead. What was particularly memorable, he says, was not the plane flying overhead, but the reaction of the men in his platoon”

Service members are in demand in the private sector

“By Philip Walzer When Robert Walker left the Army in 1996, he didn't know "where to go or what to do." Walker got three job offers: two in trucking, one in hazardous waste. He ruled out trucking because of his bum knee, so he moved to Missouri to handle hazardous waste. Today, Walker would find lots more help. A burgeoning number of recruitment companies have sprouted to place transiti...”

Norfolk Career Fair --Telecommunications Industry Recruiter
I’m a six year Navy veteran and a recent college graduate. I have been looking for work for nearly two months, and I can assure you that I have had more success at this job fair than with my entire two months of filling out applications over the internet.
Norfolk Career Fair -- Attendee
The recruiters were open and well informed about their organization's mission capabilities and future employee needs. I was impressed by the extent of the recruiter’s ability to summarize my capabilities and work them into a possible fit within the recruiter’s organization. Well done recruiters and RecruitMilitary!
Norfolk Career Fair -- Attendee
I have been to a lot of career fairs, and I would rate this one the best. The communication and organization of this event was well worth my effort to attend. The staff had a warm and friendly approach to the attendees and the positive attitude made all the difference. After attending this career fair, I feel more confident in re-joining the work force and becoming a productive citizen. Semper Fi.

Four of the people I spoke with today could come work for me tomorrow! Great event!
August 2014 Employer -- Financial Services recruiter
Do your research and dress for the occasion. Bring at least two different resumes, one which targets the job you are trying to land. The other should be a more broad based, generic one highlighting all of the jobs skills you have.
